“Finally, we have a gorgeous weather that we all have been waiting for. Let the games begin,” said Mr Frank Scarpitti, mayor of Markham, while announcing the kick off tennis season for 2018 at Unionville Tennis Club this weekend.

The Unionville Tennis Club had to hold off their initial tennis event after unexpected cold and wet weather lashed out at the city in the third week of April.

The mayor reiterated city’s commitment to support sporting events during the 2018 season with a special mention to Unionville Tennis Club.

Mr Scarpitti also announced that a tennis delegation is on the cards and a group of young talented tennis students from Singha Sports Academy are expected to get coaching and matches with Unionville Tennis Club.

Ms Marsha Mariani, Community Recreation Coordinator North Area, City of Markham said the mayor has invited invited 7 students of Singha Sports Academy, Punjab, India to get coaching and recreational games at Unionville Tennis Club from June 01 to June 10, 2018.

She said the club is in talks to get top Tennis Canada coach Mr Andy Sutton to coach the talented young players from India – Sarbjeet Kaur, Sarbjit Singh Rai, Jatinder Singh, Jaswinder Singh, Manpreet Singh, Ikbal Singh and Pratap Singh. Their visit, however, is dependent on necessary visa required to travel to Canada.

The Unionville Tennis Academy hopes such initiatives will help sports tourism and provide coaching of international level to young students from various parts of the world.
