Laura Babcock.
Three more people are expected to step into the witness box Friday at the Laura Babcock murder trial in Toronto, after a week of testimony that’s ranged from heartbreaking to chilling.
Dellen Millard, 32, of Toronto, and Mark Smich, 30, of Oakville, Ont., have both pleaded not guilty to first-degree murder in the death of the 23-year-old woman who lived in Toronto.
A doctor is expected to testify, and so is a young woman who was friends with both Babcock and Christina Noudga, who was dating Millard at the time Babcock disappeared.
During opening statements, the Crown hinted at a possible motive for murder, describing a love triangle between Millard, Babcock and Noudga.
Dellen Millard, centre, is acting as his own lawyer at the murder trial. On Tuesday, he questioned Laura Babcock’s former boyfriend, Shawn Lerner, in court.
Crown attorney Jill Cameron told jury members they’ll eventually hear evidence that Babcock and Millard were friends and “romantically involved” before Millard starting dating Noudga. Babcock apparently told Noudga that she was still sleeping with Millard — leaving Noudga “very upset,” according to the Crown.
The prosecutor read text messages Monday exchanged between Millard and Noudga in April 2012, a few months before Babcock vanished.
Millard wrote, “First I’m going to hurt her. Then I’ll make her leave. I will remove her from our lives.”
Court has heard Babcock was struggling with mental health issues and had worked as an escort, before she went missing in July 2012. Her body was never found.
Dellen Millard, left, and Mark Smich, right, are accused of first-degree murder in the death of Laura Babcock, whose body has never been found.
The trial, taking place in Ontario Superior Court, continues at 10 a.m.
